BLACK BOY PEACHES Tuesday, March 09, 2010 I was lucky enough to catch Black Boy Peaches at the University Union on Friday night. It was the first time I had seen them in their current vibe and I gotta say, they were absolutely awesome! Please check out their site at www.blackboypeaches.com and there you can download their EP for free. Featuring the fabulous drumming skills of Jackson Rodeka, this band are going to go places. Every band member is great at what they do and are into this big time. They looked and sounded like a really together unit on a mission. They are recording a new album soon and are appearing at Queenstown's Dux de Lux at the end of March. All bias aside - of course - they were fabulous and that drummer... man he's amazing! He's the real deal and is definitely one to watch in the near future.
OXO CUBANS ALBUM 'Live At Isis' MARCH 18th 8.30pm Start Thursday, March 04, 2010 After so many years at Dunedin's Isis Lounge the Oxo Cubans Trio are finally going to record an album. We debated whether we should record in a studio but felt in the end that what we do and the vibe that we seem to generate at Isis is what we really want to caputure. So we need a good crowd of Oxo fans to show up at Isis on THURSDAY 18th of MARCH. Band starts at 8.30pm The bigger the audience the better the vibe, so come on down for a night of cool jazz and blues. I can't wait. The album should then be available for sale within a couple of weeks. Will keep you posted.

ARGUS winds up big weekend! Saturday, February 13, 2010 Invercargill was the first stop for the two-date Argus shows. A great night at the Corinthian Convention centre, where the venue staff, the stage production, support band Bin Jammin and Argus all worked together to make it great night of rock'n roll. Sponsors and organisers Murray Styevens Graham Williamson, Jason Taylor, More FM radio station did a great job in making the gig to happen.
Saturday saw us move to the Captain Cook Hotel for the Legends of Rock gig. We made a racket and had a lot of fun. It was great to catch up with the members of the other bands, Noah, and Prometheous. Tried to get there in time to see their set but just couldn't make it happen.
This week its off to Queenstown for a Saturday show with X-Factor then the Art Deco Festival in Ranfurly. Plus work with The Oxo Cubans, recording, writing and teaching. Looking forward to this week.

ARGUS, OXO CUBANS, X-FACTOR and Farewell to Jacqui! Monday, February 08, 2010 Boy it's been busy - things are hotting big time. Here's my report....
A week of different bands each night at the NZ Masters Games in Dunedin was capped off with a great gig with X-Factor on Sat night. The few thousand people were up for a big night, as was the band and they yelled and screamed and danced with us the whole night. We had a great time! For me it's a personal thanks to lighting engineer Bob Russell who did a fabulous job on lights and to stage manager Adam Alexander. Both helped me out with my new drum kit and made sure things went smoothly for me, as well as the rest of the band of course. They do it so well. Thank you guys.
The three piece Oxo Cubans are in the process of planning our first album - dates are being finalised as well as a series of shows to promote the CD. Looking forward to that. I love what we do with the three piece and look getting on with promoting it. Speaking of Oxo's - our young 18 year old guitarist Jacqui Nyman-Ambrose is leaving Dunedin to go to the Wellington School of Music. Her last gig is this Thursday the 11th Feb at Isis. Jacqui is the loveliest person and a fabulous guitar player and we will miss her. Pop into Isis this Thursday to see her play and wish her Bon Voyage. Good luck Jacqui!
The big one for me this weekend is Argus. We have two shows - one in Invercargill and one at an old haunt of ours, The Captain Cook Hotel. This weekend is called Legends of Rock - My God that makes me sound old - and is a weekend the celebrate the bands that played there as youngsters in the mid 70's. Legendary Dunedin bands Stash, Noah, Prometheous and Argus are playing. We are doing the last spot on Saturday night - around 10pm or 10.30pm. Looking forward to that.
That's all for now - take care, keep smiling and till next time,
Cheers

2010 has a great ring about it. It feels good already!
| | Monday, January 18, 2010 Well it's already Jan 18th and this week begins a return to work of sorts. Though it's hard to call it work, I love what I do. This week I head back to the studio for lessons with those that are keen to get back into it.Things won't heat up properly till the full school term starts in Feb. In the meantime though I have lots to do. We are preparing for two ARGUS shows on 12th and 13th Feb. That'll be a great weekend.
This week I'm heading back to Sweetway Studios to sort through material for our first album, likely to be due out in July/Aug. We also have a couple of things planned to celebrate the album's release which I am excited about and really looking forward to.Stay tuned for more info on that closer to the time.
At the end of this month I have three shows with X-Factor and The Backline Boys playing at the NZ Masters Games here at the University campus. We are also backing the Austin Powers and Tina Turner tribute acts there. These shows are always packed and huge so will be fun. You don't have to be a participant to attend. For a small admission fee anyone can go to the shows on any night, so try and get down there it's a lot of fun.
That's all for now and don't forget to send me an email to say hi.....
Cheers

2010 HERE Friday, January 01, 2010 Happy New Year to you! It's been a great start so far - we have recovered from the very successful NYE concert in Queenstown, which was a really great night. The weather was excellent, the fireworks spectacular though I didn't really get to see them - too busy getting organised for the second set. The high production levels were not quite the same as Dunedin's with our gig, but the crowd noise and support for the band I think may have been better. It was a great night and all the band really enjoyed it. Newcomer to the Oxo's, singerJanine Weatherly, had a ball -She looked great and sang up a storm. She did a brilliant job for the band and we loved having her on board.
Young guitarist Jacqui-Nyman Rose took the stage and sung the John Meyer song 'Waiting for the World to Change and had the whole audience singing with her. She then ripped into Smoke on the Water - for 18 yearold guitarist she's an absolute pro and we love having here on board. She's off to the Wellington Jazz School this year and we wish her well. We'll miss her.
We're now having a few days off to unwind and I must admit it's great to know everything has stopped for a bit. To all those who came to the NYE gig, or those that were involved, thank you it was a great night.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Wednesday, December 30, 2009 It's the last day of 2009 today so I would now like to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR for 2010. I hope that wherever you are, it is happy, positive and successful year for you.
2009 was a bit of an odd year for me - lots of things going in different directions. I'm looking forward to more gigs, the recording of our first album ( Rodeka, Parker, Gibbins, that is, though that will not be the working name) since the last Mother Goose album. Ive played on lots of other people's albums but not my own. can't wait for that..... anyway could go on but have a show to do tonight. Looking forward to a great night.
Thank you all for your emails and support - keep it up and together we'll all have a great 2010!
Cheers

MERRY XMAS TO YOU ALL! Wednesday, December 23, 2009 It's come around so fast and the last few weeks have been a whirlwind in my house with family members from Holland and the North Island visiting and staying. Still I'm glad it's time for everything to stop for a little while - so I will take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and HAPPY XMAS! I hope it's a time of rest and relaxation for you and your families and a chance to unwind from the full on years we seem to have these days. I have family with me so it'll be a fun time.

TO ALL MY DRUM STUDIO STUDENTS, THANK YOU ! Thursday, December 17, 2009 With Xmas around the corner, it's a great opportunity for me to say THANK YOU to all my drum students, their parents and guardians for another really good year teaching. I've been very fortunate to have had a full timetable for just about all year. Thank you too to those students who have been with me a long time. I have one adult student who has been with me for the whole time I've been teaching, nearly 7 years. And this month I've had three new students start, so welcome to you.
Everyone does it for different reasons and as long as you are all enjoying it and getting something out of it, and I'm inspiring you to be better drummers, that's the main thing. So thanks again, have a great Xmas and see you on the other side of this crazy period. Warm Xmas wishes to you all and for a safe holiday break.
Cheers

ARGUS FOR 2010 Thursday, December 10, 2009 Can't believe it's been two weeks since I last wrote this column. Time has certainly raced away!
ARGUS is booked to perform two shows in February 2010. The first is the Invercargill Workingmens Club on Friday Feb 12th. Murray Stevens, one of the organisers from our last show in October, has worked with some prominent Invercargill businessmen/music lovers, who are keen to put on an Argus show there. So with their support and sponsorship, the gig is in place. The band is really looking forward to it. The venue is excellent and the enthusiasm for the band is humbling.
The second ARGUS show is at the Captain Cook Hotel, Dunedin, on SAT Feb 13th. There is a weekend of nostalgia there, featuring bands from the early to mid 70's. We were all teenagers at the time and playing, so it'll be a lot of fun seeing some of these other bands again. Upstairs at the Cook is a great venue so I suggest when tickets are released through the venue, you also contact me and I'll do my best to make sure you get tickets. I should be able to organise that. Whatever you do keep that night free, because it'll be another rocking Argus show!
Santa will be here soon so I'll be back to you before he does....
Cheers

NEW ALBUM FOR 2010 ! Monday, November 30, 2009 With two good songs already recorded and completed, Denis Gibbins, Jack Parker and I have decided to turn our works into an album. Initially, the intention was to write and record for other people and that is still the case, but we have also decided that we will turn our songs into a fully fledged album. We have no idea what name we will use or what the album will be called as it's all too early. The album will be recorded at Sweetway Studios under the watchful, skilled eye of producer/engineer Ross McNab. We also plan on having a launch gig next year when it's released to tie in with some other special events. Personally, I'm really looking forward to releasing new product in 2010. It's exciting times and I will keep you posted as we get closer.

RUMOURS! Argus for mid February 2010 - Dunedin and Invercargill ! Friday, November 27, 2009 Still being finalised are dates for a weekend of ARGUS in mid February 2010. There are a couple of events coming up that Argus have been invited to be part of. As soon as these are confirmed you'll be the first to know. One of these dates includes a show in Invercargill. I know the guys are keen to take Argus to a new audience for the sheer fun of it, so this show will be something special too.
Will keep you posted as soon as details are confirmed. Now that will be a fun weekend to look forward to!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 We are delighted to be able to add the excellent vocal skills of X-Factor singer, Janine Weatherly, for our Queenstown New Year's Eve show. Rob and I have recorded a few albums together as a hired rhythm section and we have also done numerous shows together which are always fun. Doug, Craig and I look forward to them joining us. So the full line-up is.....

DRUM STUDIO T-SHIRTS and CAPS AVAILABLE FOR SALE Sunday, November 22, 2009 Check out the Merchandise page for Drum Studio T-Shirts and caps. I'm going to develop this page with other Drum Studio and drumming stuff available so, keep an eye out over the next few months.

Videos on youtube now. Sunday, November 15, 2009 You should be able to view all my videos on the Video page without a glitch now. Thanks to Bob McNeil from MusicsitePro.com - my excellent web designer - for his help there. This is the first time the Perfect Strangers clip has been available on the Internet. If you used to be a fan - I hope you enjoy.
So the four videos available on youtube are:
HARPO'S VOICE - Running on Wonderment and The Waiting Game
PERFECT STRANGERS - Stand Up
INCREDIBLE PENGUINS - Happy Xmas War is Over
MORE VIDEOS ON VIDEO PAGE ! Thursday, November 12, 2009 I now have the other two videos on my Video page. These are the second song from Harpo's Voice, called The Waiting Game and a video by Perfect Strangers called Stand Up. It features the talents of the truly - one and only - Andy Clayton Smith our lead singer. He was an amazing frontman full of energy, passion and conviction. He used to do spectacular backflips onstage as he used to be a Western Australia gymnastics champion. A nicer guy you would never meet and his untimely death of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma at age 28, shook everyone who knew him. I hope you enjoy.
I understand some of you are having trouble seeing these with a 'friends' message appearing. I;m working on that and hope to have it sorted soon. Apologies and thanks for your patience.
NEW OLD VIDEOS ON youtube NOW ! Wednesday, November 11, 2009 The first of my new three old videos has just been uploaded to youtube and soon to my video page. These videos belong to two of my previous bands post Mother Goose.
Go to youtube and punch in HARPO"S VOICE - and the song is called ' Running On Wonderment'. This was a good band - didn't last long but we made two good videos in our quest for a record deal. Sadly, originally from Dunedin singer and bass player, John Sanderson, lost a battle with cancer in the mid 90's. This is a tribute to him.
Now don't forget - if you haven't already done so, simply create an account on youtube - top right - put in a username and password and when you've done that - you can post a text comment underneath the video clip. We want as much feedback as we can. Thanks! Oh....and excuse the mullet!
This next video is already posted on youtube, not by me. It's a band I was also in,THE INCREDIBLE PENGUINS in Melbourne immediately after Mother Goose broke up. We had a hit record with the Xmas cover of John lennon's song ' Happy Xmas War is Over'. I played drums and tympani and the song features heaps of famous singers including John Farnham, Sir Bob Geldof, Vanetta Fields and many more. It was a one- off and was a lot of fun to make. Check it out.
There are two more videos to come any day... will let you know when. Don't forget I would love your feedback either on youtube or via email direct to me!
Enjoy....cheers, Marcel
Merchandise and Video Clips Sunday, November 08, 2009 Hi there to you all. After a hectic but fun weekend in Christchurch it's back to the studio and back to teaching, but that's all good. It's all about variety and I get plenty of that. My Drum Studio T-shirts and military style (Cuban) caps will be available for purchase shortly. Keep an eye out as there will be a special page dedicated.
Have also had a portion of my musical heritage/history converted from VHS to DVD - there's still much to process..... so soon, on my Video page, there will be two new video clips from two of my previous Australian bands. These were bands I played in and loved dearly before I came back to NZ in 1991. I can't wait to get them out there as I am really proud of them. Ironically and sadly though, both clips feature fantastic lead singers who have both passed away, one while he was still in the band, but more on that when the clips appear. This will be a tribute to them. The clips will also appear on youtube at the same time. Will let you know when.
In the meantime, I hope this finds you all well and happy.
Much love and keep smiling!

SPACE FOR NEW DRUM STUDENTS! Wednesday, October 28, 2009 For the first time this year I have two spaces to fill in my drum teaching timetable. I'm lucky to always have a full timetable which makes getting in difficult for prospective students. But with two students moving out of town I have space. If you or anyone you know wants to make a start at drum lessons please let me know buy sending me an email - info@drumstudio.co.nz and we'll go from there. Thanks!

BLACK BOY PEACHES Tuesday, October 27, 2009 Friday night 23rd October 2009 saw the official launch of new Dunedin band Black Boy Peaches - www.blackboypeaches.com. Featuring the Mehpam brothers, Tom and Hamish, - formerly of Mephamology and Native - bass player Adam and 18 yearold drummer Jackson Rodeka, they played a thrilling set of original songs to a supportive and enthusiastic crowd at Sammy's. Feedback has been nothing short of fantastic and was a great way to launch their first seven track CD, called Slasher. Recorded by the band and mixed by producer/engineer Dale Cotton the CD sounds like a band organised and together, totally committed and on a mission to get their rock sound out to as many people as possible. It has a great rock vibe so check them out.
DRUM STUDIO MERCHANDISE Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Available for sale very soon are Drum Studio T-Shirts and military style caps all with the Drum Studio logo. Initially, these will probably only be available to NZ/Australia residents. Photo's will appear on a new page soon. Stay tuned.
CHICANE Monday, October 12, 2009 If you ever want to chill out to some of the best dance/chill out music made these days you need to youtube the band CHICANE. The music is chill out/trance/dance/ and full of melody - singers like Tom Jones, Natasha Beddingfield and Bryan Adams have all sung with Chicane. The man is an artist in the truest sense- listen to the song Saltwater featuring Maire Brennan from Clannad or the latest Chicane remix version of Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood...search out all his songs, as well as the brand new song Hiding All The Stars featuring a sample of Cars by Gary Numan. It's the coolest thing. Check out the song OFFSHORE - after a busy day and the kids are in bed - you pour a class of wine, sit down and unwind... there is nothing better. Go on I dare you... do it now, look them up on youtube. You won't be disappointed.... I can't get enough of it.... this music puts me in my place.. it forces me to slow down!
Cheers Marcel | | | |
Argus Gig a great success! Sunday, October 11, 2009 Well the gig is over and the the feedback has been nothing but positive - there was a great crowd and a great vibe in the room. Complements were also flying for the production crew of Gordon Duff and Errol Head from Strawberry Sound, who put together a great looking show and excellent sound by sound engineer Gordy. To say the gig was pumping is an understatement! The crowd were right into it from the beginning and kept up the dancing and yelling all night. From the band's point of view, we had a great time! There was the odd slightly dodgey moment, you get that when you only pay once a year - but overall the band played well and we had a lot of fun.
Doing this once a year or once every 18 months or so, means the band and the crowd get a chance to have a real blowout. It was great to see some of my students and students parents there. To all of you who read this who were there, thank you for supporting the gig - the band had a ball! Talk is already on about next year's gig - sound's like fun but we'll wait and see first after the debrief.
I'll keep you posted.

Argus next weekend! Saturday, October 03, 2009 Well the Australian and Christchurch Argus contingent arrive on Tuesday and then it'll be straight to rehearsals for Saturday's gig. I'm really looking forward to seeing my friends and getting it all together. The gig is selling well but tickets are still available so get in touch with me if you need some - or visit Downes Gemtime Jewellers in Mosgiel or Beggs Musicworks in Moray Place. On the night, doors open at 7pm and there will be a support act before Argus hits the stage at around 9.30pm.
During this week I'll try and post photos of rehearsals etc. Look forward to seeing you all there!
OXO CUBANS to record. ARGUS tickets selling fast! Saturday, September 26, 2009 Hi from Dunedin, New Zealand. After a wonderful spring start the weather has gone cold on us. Not quite the depths of winter but cold all the same. Hopefully this cold spell won't last too long!
As my previous news item said, September was always going to be hectic and last night - Sat 26th - it has finally eased off. I'm really glad too - as I now have a little time to breathe before the Xmas thing takes off in a month or so. This week is school holidays so I have two weeks off regular tutoring. I have employed my son, Harley, to help me in the studio this week, clean, do a bit of painting and re-organising and generally tidy things up. I will catch up on paperwork and generally get my life sorted!
After talking about it for so long, the Oxo Cubans three piece are finally going to record an album in mid November. It was decided that Albany St studio at the University of Otago would be the best place for us to record. This is mainly due to the lovely big grand piano in there for us to use, as well as the convenience of just going in there to do it as quickly as possible. So for all those OXO CUBANS fans who have seen us at Isis or know of our history, you'll be able to buy our album online when it's released. I will keep you up to date on that.
ARGUS tickets are selling well and the guys are up for a rocking gig on October 10th. I personally am really looking forward to it as it's a chance to step out from my usual type of gigs and also it'll be great to catch up with my friends again who come over from Australia. Can't wait. It's a week of build up and then a blast at the gig. Tickets available from me if you need.
Thanks to the band Subject 2 Change for having me as their drummer last night at the Glenroy Auditorium. It was a fun night.
MY GIG PHOTOS:
Don't forget to go to my photo gallery - Gig Photos - then click on MY GIG PHOTOS for an up to the minute look at my places, people and shows that I play.
Hope this finds you all well and happy and wherever you are, love and peace to you all.
Cheers

HECTIC SEPTEMBER Sunday, September 13, 2009 Well it's a busy time this month. This month I'm on two trips to Christchurch and Wanaka - one in the weekend just gone - see My Journal - and another this Thursday to attend the Silver Scroll awards at Christchurch Town Hall. I'm going with my good friend Ross McNab from Sweetway Studios to attend both the awards and a meeting the following morning. Then it's a gig in Oamaru on the Friday - been a long time since I've done a gig there... years I reckon. Also playing drums for Dunedin band Subject 2 Change, in a couple of weeks filling in for their drummer which will be fun. The Oxo Cubans are also busy with plans to record soon and have a few good gigs coming up too. As well as that ARGUS is getting ready for the Oct 10th show - which will be a blast. Tickets still available from me if you need.
Spring so far here has been lovely and what a difference some warm weather makes to your life. I hope that wherever you are reading this, that there may be some sun shining on you.
cheers

WEEKEND WARRIORS - This Sunday at the Terrace Bar, 2pm Sunday, August 23, 2009 I'm delighted that two of my adult drum students, Stewart Springer and John Kiernan-Sear are playing at this Sunday's Weekend Warriors. With a few weeks rehearsals and togther with other band members they had never met - the guys have been rehearsing a short list of songs to play. I'm really looking forward to it. I would have had three drummers but student Paul Buckingham had to pull out for other reasons. It's a great chance for these part time drummers to get out and do a real gig. I'm sure they'll have a blast! If you get a chance - pop in and support the bands this Sunday 30th August!
OXO CUBANS looking for female singer/ LOW SPEED BUS CHASE now on youtube Wednesday, August 05, 2009 The Oxo Cubans are looking for a female singer to be part of the wider community of Oxo musicians.
The person we are looking for must firstly have a good strong singing voice, but also not be scared of small intimate audiences nor be threatened by audiences of up to 20,000 people. We need someone who can take command of the stage and the audience and their delivery of the songs. If that's you or you know someone who would be good, please contact me or visit the Oxo Cubans website...www.oxocubans.co.nz and send an email.
Taking that a step further, there may also be opportunities to sing on some recordings. Our songwriting team, Rodeka, Parker, Gibbins also need a female voice for backing vocals and the odd lead vocal/duet. Be great to hear from you!
The Bus Chase boys!
If you've been with me in this News column you would have seen me ramble on about the wonderful band Low Speed Bus Chase and their album, Thrill of The Chase, on which I played drums.
The video for their single ' Will Nostalgia Turn Blue' is now for all to see on Youtube. It's a great clip made by Dunedin production house 38 Pictures. Go and have a look at it and post a comment. The guys have moved to Melbourne and would appreciate the feedback.
Tickets are selling fast for ARGUS in October, contact me if you want any. It's going to be a huge night.
Wherever you are, I hope you are well and happy!
My very best,
Marcel

OXO CUBANS FOR QUEENSTOWN NEW YEARS EVE & ARGUS For OCTOBER Tuesday, July 14, 2009 After four good years of playing Dunedin's Octagon, the Oxo Cubans have been invited to play on the waterfront at Queenstown this coming New Years Eve. I love Queenstown and a couple of years ago we played there at the Winter Festival. It was fabulous. This time it's holiday time and I'm using it as a springboard to my end of year break. I'm really looking forward to the change and the challenge of helping Queesntown people and all its visitors celebrate New Years Eve...will be a great gig...... bring it on!
PUT THIS IN YOUR DIARY!!!.....Soon to be officially announced - Argus playing their one and only show in Dunedin on Saturday October10th 2009. Usually, we have organised our own shows...this time however the band has been hired for one show only! At this stage entry is by ticket only, but there may be very limited door sales. All details confirmed and released by the end of the week. Suffice to say, the band is really already looking forward to it...any excuse for a noisey rock'n roll party! More details shortly.....standby.
Have been busy over the last few weeks with trying to catch up on admin stuff during the school holidays and University break. It's been nice to have a bit of a break though. had a good two days with X Factor in Invercargill. Friday's gig was at Stadium Southland and was billed as a country howdown. We backed Auckland fiddle playing dynamo, Marian Burns... was fun. At night we played Ascot park Hotel with the usual X factor show - was also a success.
Currently waiting on a mix of our last Rodeka, Parker, Gibbins song so we can start shopping a publishing deal. The song is shaping up well. Also am writing and working on our next two songs and about to work with X Factor singer, the wonderful Janine Weatherly, who we figure will add a great touch to our music.
That's all for now.....hope it's warmer where you are are becuase we are all freezing cold here and totally over the winter. Stay happy....

RIP MICHAEL JACKSON Sunday, June 28, 2009 It seems strange to be writing about the death of Michael Jackson. It was all so sudden and unexpected, though he has been looking a little on the frail side, I think we were all wondering how he was going to manage 50 concerts! But I wasn't prepared for his passing that's for sure. I'm sure everyone has their Michael Jackson memory. Lynn and I had a holiday in Queenstown and thrashed the Off The Wall album all the way there and all the way back. Then we were in Perth with Mother Goose when Thriller was getting thrashed all the time - we loved it. Michael Jackson music was thrashed in our house by our two boys as they grew up - they learnt the moves, the walk and danced around the lounge room for years, blasting the live videos and rocking to Beat It, Billy Jean and countless others. Not surprisingly, they were gutted on hearing the news of his death.
One ot the world's best musicians and entertainers ever, totally unique and in a class (world) of his own. RIP Michael Jackson.

Produced by the wonderful Dunedin production company 38 Pictures, and directed by Sam Clarkson, it features the band in scenes shot at the Henley bridge, about 20 minutes from central Dunedin. It's a great clip, and along with the band features yours truly on the soundtrack, along with fellow musicicains, Rob Burns and Ross McNab. Delayed News Friday, June 05, 2009 I honestly don't know where the last few weeks have gone. It seems to have been a blur of rehearsals, University assessments both preparation and performance assessments, recording sessions, gigs, travel out of town, travel in town, studio teaching and somewhere in there I have tried to fit in home life. They say to balance work and family but these last two weeks it's been pretty much all work and not much play. But as I've said in the past, it's not my place to complain as I'm so lucky to do what I do and love it.
For those of you who have missed my journal, I'll now be able to get back to it this weekend as things now settle down for me a bit. Looking forward to keeping you up to date again.
Cheers Marcel | | | |
Sun Shines Again Tuesday, May 26, 2009 After a pretty rotten two weeks of wet weather it's nice to see the sun out again and things drying out. It's been a while since I've updated this, but it's been busy time of it as usual and but I'm not complaining. I love it all.
The John Egenes CD launch last month was a lot of fun with a good crowd in to be part of John's special occaision. Also I've had some good gigs with the Oxo Cubans and the odd one with X-Factor - these have all been private events, apart from Isis. I've also been best man for my good friend Ross McNab from Sweetway Studios, who recently married the wonderful Jude Miller in a small ceremony in Owaka, the Catlins. It was a great weekend.
We have also been recording - finishing our next two songs which are shaping up really well. Jack Parker, our singer/writer has been busy with the upcoming launch of their new CD ' The Thrill of The Chase'. Ross and I are playing at the band's launch gig to be held at 12 Below, on June 13th. Tickets are now availaible.....email me if you're interested. The band is called ' Low Speed Bus Chase' and their debut album is a very good 'acoustic driven rock/pop' album. CD's will be available at the gig.
The band is then moving to Melbourne next month and Ross and I - as the token session musicians- plan on helping them with their showcase gig there in August. Should be great fun.!
University assessments are coming up so I have a full week this week and next week preparing for my students, in amongst a full studio timetable, Bus Chase rehearsals, Oxo Cubans rehearsals, X Factor reherasals - I have Saturday night off so plan on catching up with friends from Christchurch. Also will be able to watch my boys play football which I love.
Go Manchester United for tomorrow's Champions League final!!! I'll be glued to the TV!
Remember, its great to have you on board and feel free to email me anytime
Cheers

Variety - the Spice of Life Sunday, April 26, 2009 You can't say that I ever get bored doing what I'm lucky enough to do! Im indeed priviledged to be a doing what I love and there has been lots of variety in my work. Recently, I've had a succesful, yet to be completed, recording session for Rodeka, Parker, Gibbins. Our two songs our coming up really well. I've been really enjoying developing my guitar playing for the tracks. Evereyone involved has given their all to the project. Hope to finish them this weekend and then get them mixed and sent to 301 in Sydney for mastering.
Have a had a good variety of gigs - Isis has been great with The Oxo Cubans - the three piece played two weeks ago and it was a refreshing change from the full band. The three piece jazzy blues thing is such fun and a bit more of cahllenge drumming wise. With great players like Craig Reeves on bass and Doug Wright at the piano - you can't help enjoy it. It's a fine trio. We had the full band last Friday which was great -and we had that line up for Saturday's gig which was also fun!
In two weeks I have a CD Launch for local singer songwriter and excellent musician, John Egenes, for his new album Up For Air. The gig is at Chicks Hotel in Port Chalmers on May 9th and features a great lineup of musicians including Anna Bowen on fiddle, Mike Moroney on guitar, the wicked Rob Burns on bass. Should be a fun gig - if you like your country/ alt-country then get along to the gig. Have also been rehearsing with Low Speed Bus Chase for their CD launch. More info on that soon. The new school term has started so that means the studio is back to full swing, so it's all go, but that's all good. I love it..... oh I hope to have some important drumming news soon, if you're a drummer, stay tuned!
Hope this finds you well and remember to drop me an email.

Write Away, Right Away Monday, April 13, 2009 Easter was a great weekend - I had a plenty of down time to watch my son Harley play football as well as relax with the family but also on the Saturday I went to a songwriting workshop called Write Away, Right Away. Those in attendence were Ross McNab, engineer and producer from Sweetway Studios, Shane Woolridge, a great songwriter with his own albums under his belt from Queenstown, Jack Parker - with the awesome voice - from Dunedin band Low Speed Bus Chase (their debut album due out in May), award winning country music singer Aaron Jury and myself. It was held at Woodstock Lodge, in Owaka, The Catlins. The objective was to combine our skills, talent and ideas and see what sort of music this mix of minds could create.
Shane put it best when he said we were basically 'shaking hands musically' as we were all from such diverse musical backgrounds. Over the 24 hour period we came up with three good ideas that are worth recording. We did a lot of talking about songs and song writing and all in all for me, it was a great experience! Each person had something quite unique to offer and I was really blown away with Aaron's approach to music, his excellent guitar playing and his hunger to learn. That's taking nothing away from everyone else, who were all wicked musicians in their own right. It was a great day and was superbly organised by the wonderful Jude Miller, from Sweetway Studios. I hope that wherever you are, your Easter was happy and restful.
The songwriting partnership of Rodeka, Parker, Gibbins continues next week when we record two more songs. We'll then go on a promotional drive to push the songs around publishing companies. It's also school holidays so I'm have a bit more time up my sleeve to focus on pre-production for the recording.
In the meantime I have rehearsals with the awesome Low Speed Bush Chase for their album launch in May and a gig with my great mates from the Oxo Cubans at Isis on Friday night.
I hope this finds you all well and happy and don't forget to send me an email to say Hi.
Cheers

GIG and Birthday's Sunday, March 29, 2009 Well they call it March Madness and for me March was indeed mad but a lot of fun. Personally it was a blast as our son celebrated his 21st birthday party at 12 Below in town. What a great night that was. March seems to be the month for birthdays as my wife Lynn and other friends all had birthdays.
Have had some cool gigs with the Oxo Cubans and a few more of those coming up. Isis has been great fun with John Meddngs stepping in while Doug Wright is away in Christchurch working on a television series. I've got a few gigs with X-Factor to do shortly, with a good gig just done in the weekend in Cromwell, Central Otago at a Rotary conference.
Have started rehearsing with local band The Chase for their upcoming launch night. This band have got a cracker album soon to be released and I believe they'll be a great success, both here and Australia - then the world! Look out for their launch dates to be announced soon.
Am also doing a CD launch for John Egenes' new CD. This is at Chicks Hotel, Port Chalmers on May 9th. The band includes excellent musicians such as Rob Burns and John Dodd on bass Anna Bowen on fiddle and Mike Moroney on guitar. Looking forward to that gig - small band, small gig, great players great songs.
Also coming up in April is another recording session for the Rodeka- Parker- Gibbins, song writing team. We have two new songs to record with Ross McNab at Sweetway Studios in Owaka, where we just seem to all work so well. Can't wait for that.
That's all for now. Wherever you are reading this I hope this finds you well and happy.... keep smiling, take care and remember to give someone you care about a hug.
Cheers

Work Update Sunday, March 08, 2009 Hi there,
It's been too long since I've updated this page so I hope wherever you are this finds you well. There's been a lot going on lately. I'm back tutoring at Otago University and from what I've seen of my first two classes it should be a good year with some good new students coming through. I've had quite a few gigs on lately too. The Art Deco Festival in Ranfurly was good fun, as was the short set at the new Oamaru Opera House with the Oxo Cubans. What a great building and concert venue that is.
Have also been writing with Jack Parker from The Chase and Denis Gibbins and have been following up some initial interest in one of our songs in Melbourne. We'll wait and see where that goes. Jack and I are also joining three other writers and going out of town for two days on a writing retreat soon. It'll be great to see what we come up. More news on both those things shortly. Next month we are planning to record again.
Last Thursday I had new photos taken for this website and for other promo stuff by Melanie Peters and Tony from Melt Images Dunedin. They are a great team and produce great work. Check them out at: www.meltnz.co.nz. I look forward to seeing the photos uploaded soon. In the meantime, the studio timetable is full and I've been enjoying the Oxo Cubans Isis gigs.
That's all for now so till next time take care and don't forget to send me an email.......
cheers, Marcel | | | |
Working out
| | Monday, February 16, 2009 Well it's now well into February and my schedule is hotting up. Caught up with the guys from local band The Chase on Sunday and had an afternoon final listening sessions of their first album due out May. It's going to be interesting to follow it's progress as I believe the album is full of strong songs by a band that knows where it's sound and vibe is at. I have been asked to play drums at a couple of their launch gigs coming up once the album is out. Now that will be fun!
This weekend I'm with X- Factor at the Art Deco Festival in Ranfurly - along with Marian Burns who is flying in from Auckland to join us. Also performing is the Silverpeaks Country Music Club with the wonderful Bevan Gardner on drums. Hope Bevan pulls his guitar out and joins us onstage again for a few songs... now there is one talented boy to look out for. His performance of John Denver in the theatre concert series last year was extraordinary! He's one who is also destined to hit the big time one day - he's a gem of a performer, singer, songwriter and drummer.

Masters Games Finish
| | Saturday, February 07, 2009 Today is the last day of the NZ Masters Games, being held in the North Island Town of Wanganui. Have been here for a week with X-Factor band and have been employed as backing drummer to artists including Auckland fiddle playing dynamo, Marian Burns as well as Austin Powers, Freddie Mercury and Tina Turner tribute acts. Also appearing this week was 50's and 60's legend Johnny Devlin and his band from Australia, The Tornadoes. I also backed him in the middle of town at a mayoral civic reception for him in his honour - he's originally from Wanganui. We played Whole Lotta Shakin Goin on and Hound Dog. He's 71 years old and still rockin'. I played with X-Factor on Friday night and we had 5000 people singing and yelling along to many of our songs. It was a fun gig. Shane Cortese, well known actor from hit TV Show Outrageous Fortune was also here with his band last night. He was great as was his band. It was the first time I had met Shane and I throughly enjoyed the chat I had with him. Nice guy. | |
2009
| | Friday, February 06, 2009 I must say January has come and gone pretty quickly and now February already has a lot in store for me. I start off the first week in Wanganui in the North Island, playing a series of shows at the NZ Masters Games. I'm going up with Bill Acklin and the team, incorporating an X Factor show, as well as backing a number of other artists including the excellent fiddle playing dynamo, Marion Burns.
Then it's the Art Deco Festival in Ranfurly later in the month, plus my regular Oxo Cubans gigs which I love, and then the studio will be in full swing with students from Feb 9th, so you could say the year is once again off and running. The wonderful Oxo Cubans have also got some cool corporate shows coming up which I'm really looking forward to. My website is going to have a minor upgrade made to it too this month, so keep an eye for that in a few weeks.
Till next time, take care and keep smiling and remember to send me an email to say hi,
Marcel

Live at New Year's Eve Concert, The Octagon, Dunedin 2008
| | Sunday, January 04, 2009 This photo was taken by Stephen Ward while I was doing my two-song stint at the Oxo Cubans New Years Eve concert. I'm still smiling now at the fun I had! Getting out from behind the drum kit was a real blast! The whole band did a brilliant job. Thanks to my good friends and fellow Oxo Cubans Craig Reeves for his hard work in getting this gig and the band up and firing. To Musical Director, Doug Wright, for his great work in sorting out who does what, when. And to sound engineer Simon GLozier who flew in from Melbourne to give us the punch and excellent sound out front we needed. Cheers Simon, always a pleasure mate! | | | |
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Rock on 2009
| | Wednesday, December 31, 2008 Hi to you all and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR tp you. I hope that wherever you are 2009 will bring much happiness and success. For me it'll be another busy year, but I'm not complaining, I'm privilged to be able to make music for a living.
The Oxo Cubans new years eve concert in the Octagon, Dunedin last night was by all accounts a raging success. This gig was more of a rock gig and around 15,000 people crammed the Octagon and for the concert then fireworks then more of the concert. By the end the place was jumping! I had a great time, even getting out front with my guitar and singing two songs with the band - that was such good fun!
I hope 2009 will be a good one for you
Cheers, Marcel

NEARLY XMAS AND TIME FOR A WELL NEEDED BREAK
| | Tuesday, December 16, 2008 Well I can't believe where this year has gone. I have tried to keep this up to date but the last few weeks have been pretty hectic. I have had quite a few gigs playing drums with Dunedin's X-Factor cabaret band. We've been doing Xmas corporate dinner and show gigs in Dunedin at the Lion Foundation Arena and Invercargill most of which have been pretty much sold out. They've been fun to play.
I've also been in rehearsals for the Oxo Cubans New Years concert in the Octagon. We now have a settled lineup of singers and musicians and are now busy learning all the music. Should be a fun gig with a wide variety of well known pop/rock songs. I'm really looking forward to it.
SONGWRITING / RECORDING - Rodeka, Parker, Gibbins
As well as all that, the songwriting partnership I have with Denis Gibbins (Mother Goose, Argus) and Jack Parker (Low Speed Bus Chase, Junkies in General) is going great and is so enjoyable. We've begun a project and recorded two songs with the one and only Ross McNab at Sweetway Studios in Owaka and we're delighted with the results. Ross added his wonderful, emotive keyboard playing skills to both songs and his production experience, feel and dedication to the music has been really inspiring. We've loved it and we are due to carry on with two more songs afer Xmas. Our main aim with the songs is to attract publishing interest.

ATTITUDE IN RHYTHM - MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA
| | Monday, November 17, 2008 Based in my second home of Melbourne, Australia, Attitude in Rhythm is operated by former Real Life (Send Me An Angel) drummer and my very close friend Danny Simcic. If you're looking for world class recording facilities, production with links to other facets of the industry then look no further. Oxos Prepare for New Years Eve Rock Show 2008
| | Monday, October 20, 2008 It's on again for one more year. The Oxo Cubans have been contracted to put together an 'adult oreinted rock' show for this years Dunedin New Years Eve celebrations in the Octagon. This time the show will feature less people on stage but with no less impact as we prepare a set list that covers lots of different well known rock songs. It should be another fun night. Rehearsals have just started and I am one who is looking forward to putting on a great show with my fellow Oxo Cuban bandmates. More info as it comes to hand.
Great to see one of my student drummers from The Otago University Conemporay Rock Music course, John Adams, secure the drumming chair for Dunedin's production of the show 'The Full Monty'. John is a good drummer and I'm sure he'll do well in the show. Also in the show's orchestra are fellow Oxo Cubans and University tutor guitarist Dave Horizon and Senior Lecturer from the music course Rob Burns on bass. Should be a great show.

THE IDAN RAICHEL PROJECT
| | Saturday, September 06, 2008 Every now and then you hear something new by an artist you've never heard of and their music just touches your soul. That is what the Idan Raichel Project did for me recently. Being a great fan of world music I purchased the June issue of Global Rhythm magazine. It came with a free CD - a compilation of world music artists. The opening song stopped me in my tracks. The song Mi'Ma'amakim by Idan Raichel Project is a hypnotic, beautiful piece of songwriting, mixing traditional Ethiopian melodies and Israeli influences. It has not left my car CD player.
The album, which I immediately ordered and bought, is called The Idan Raichel Project and is a collection of songs written and produced mainly by Idan Raichel from a period between 2002 and 2006. The album is a totally engrossing experience, a melodic, rhythmic mix of cultures and melodies that I find breathtakingly beautiful. There is an awesome mix of singers, musicians and nationalities and the fusion of their sound is something to behold. The CD also comes with special features, videos and downloads so you get a great insight into this wonderful artist. The IRP are huge in the Middle East, having already had seven number ones in Israel! Over the last couple of years of touring they are quickly winning dedicated fans all over the globe. Without doubt - I am one of them!
As a famous Australian media guru once said - do yourself a favour - look them up on the net at myspace or at www.idanraichelproject.com or on youtube or best of all, hunt the album down and buy it. It's an awesome album......and most importantly.....don't forget to spread the word!

NEW PERTH STUDIO for PERFECT STRANGERS KEYBOARD PLAYER, NOEL DAVIES
| | Sunday, August 17, 2008 A lot visitors to this website come from Australia and actually, a large portion from Perth. This city is close to my heart as it's where Mother Goose based itself in 1982 and also where I later joined the excellent Perth band Perfect Strangers. Keyboard player of Strangers was Noel Davies. It's great to see Noel back doing what he does so very well, playing and recording music. He has recently opened JANDAKOT DIGITAL RECORDING STUDIOS.
Situated 20 minutes out of Perth Noel offers all manner of services to singer songwriters and bands in a fully equipped dedicated recording studio. Aside from that you have in Noel, a musician whose experience in programming, sampling and keyboard skills is second to none. If you're in Perth and you want to record then you must check out the studio at www.rhotan.com.au you won't be disappointed.
BATTLE OF THE BANDS - Refuel, Dunedin.
| | Tuesday, June 03, 2008 Last night I had a night off from gigging and took the opportunity to pop down to the Refuel nightclub at Otago University to see the finals of the 2008 Battle of The Bands competition. Many of the guitarists and drummers are doing the Contemporary Rock Music degree and so I was able to witness at least five of my drum students from the course playing in their respective bands.
I was really glad that I could be there. They were fabulous.
The quality of the bands was very impressive and the highlights for me were performances by Sunset Cinema, featuring excellent drummer Samdrub Dawa. Also Pimpin Dave and the Pirate Hookers featuring the one and only Dave Harrison on guitar were fabulous, as were The Biff Merchants with Ben Sergeant on drums. They brought a little prog rock to the gig. Junkies in General acoustic version featuring the excellent Tim Hambleton on lead vocals were also a standout band but nothing prepared me for Incarnate, a heavy metal band fro Dunedin.
I had heard lots about Incarnate before but had never seen managed to see them. They totally blew me away with tight metal riffs, speed drumming, a good frontman, good songs and energy to burn and a with confidence that ripped through the crowd. Led by Mike Mitchell on guitar and Daniel Shea on vocals, they have the songs, the talent and skill to go all the way. I wish them luck. Their set was awesome and consequently, they won the competion. It was a great night and all the drummers from Uni who I work with were fabulous.

ARGUS ROCKS DUNEDIN!
| | Monday, March 31, 2008 Well another Argus weekend has passed and another two great nights were had. The band had a fabulous time playing to all the fans who turned out once again to hear all their old favourite classic rock songs and some new ones. Bennu was jumping! At one point during the show guitarists Peter Dickson and Chris Davies left the stage with their guitars to join the dancing audience down the front. But then decided they would go for a look outside so while still playing they first ran across the road then ran around the building and came back in through the alleyway entrance back into to the crowd and then back on to the stage - all the while still playing! The crowd loved it. It was a rather Mother Goose moment. A good indication of the fun gig it was for the band and the crowd.
Production by Gordy and Errol of Strawberry Sound and big screen visuals by Barry McConnachie of Audioworks, the show looked and sounded great. The band would like to thank all the production people involved and the MacCallister family, owners of Bennu, for all their support. Photos of the gig will be on my Live Shots page shortly.

ROCKY HORROR SHOW A HUGE SUCCESS
| | Wednesday, May 23, 2007 The Queenstown season of the Rocky Horror Show is now completed and can only be considered a raging success. For me, it was a wonderful experience and one that I am delighted and privilged to have been part of.
Produced by Doug Kamo and Simon Green of Ignite, these talented producers have presented a an excellent show. A fantastic cast, a fantastic band and a totally dedicated crew have ensured that this show is one that Queenstown audiences will remember as being one of the best shows seen here for a long time.
The cast left the stage each night to standing ovations and lots of yelling for more. It's as good as any rock gig I've been part of.
The band, under the expert guidance of Musical Director Stuart Walker featured legendary Exponents bass player, Dave Gent, sax player Paul Young from Dunedin's Retrophonic Funk Machine, guitarist Ben Lynch, from Queenstown band the Lynch Mob, Queenstown's Cheryl Collie playing second keyboards and Marcel Rodeka on drums.
Director Doug Kamo truly realised his vision of a high energy, electric rock show while staying totally true to the legendary Rocky Horror story. A superb job by him and I know that everyone involved will miss the excitement and energy of the show, as well as the friendships made.

MOTHER GOOSE & ARGUS - WHAT A MONTH MARCH WAS!
| | Sunday, April 29, 2007 The month of March 2007 will go down as one of the most historical music months in Dunedin's music history ever. Mother Goose reformed for the first time in 25 years and Argus blew into Bennu and tore the place to pieces. The Mother Goose concert was indeed a very special event. The large group of fans who clung to the front of the stage dressed all in the same green Mother Goose T-shirts really got everyone into the spirit of the event. You guys were awesome! You looked great from where we were.
The feedback from that gig has been nothing short of sensational and we thank everyone who sent texts, emails and phonecalls from around the world sending us messages of support. It meant a lot and as a band, we loved every minute of it. It seemd like just a few months ago we stopped touring... not 25 years.
It was captured for DVD and there has been talk of an official release, however nothing is yet in place. Stay tuned.
Thank you to the DCC, Caroline Cook, Lyn Herbet and the Dunedin Heritage Festival team for organising a great gig. Scott Muir (Refuel, The Chills/Delgirl) had the thankless task of being Production Manager and did and awesome job making sure Mother Goose got what we needed to put on a killer show. Thanks so much Scott.
ARGUS then blew into Bennu the following Friday. Owners Paul and Roger Brooks agreed some months ago to turn their wonderful cafe/bar into an all out rock gig. Wow.. what a blast. Sold out three days in advance that place went off! What an inspired decision. The venue was perfect for a rock gig and the band loved every minute of it. The band again needs to thank all those who were there, the sound/lights and staging team and especially all the sponsors.
You all helped the place rock!
For me personally, normal life was put on hold as these two gigs came together. I wouldn't have missed it for the world and you can bet on the fact that both bands will appear at some stage, in some format, somewhere again soon.
THANKS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED especially the FANS - it was awesome.
Much love to you all
Marcel

MOTHER GOOSE ROCKS THE REGENT at RESOUND!
| | Sunday, April 15, 2007 Wow, what a night! What a blast! What a fantastic time we had! The first time in 25 years that we had all stood on the same stage together and it was just so much fun. It was a special night for many people especially for the fans who last saw us at the Regent in 1977 and the friends who travelled from Australia to see us. We have been inundated with texts and emails and messages from all over the world wishing us the best. We sincerely thank you all... we took your best wishes on board and had a blast!
For up to date photos of the concert check out www.seenindunedin.co.nz. There will also be photos appearing soon on this website.
Thank you the event organisers, the production crew and all those involved. You helped us turn our part of the show into a night we, as a band, will remember for a long time.Cheers, Marcel - drums Mother Goose
